Why should I join TRI?
The Remanufacturing Institute is a voluntary organization that seeks to further
the interests of all remanufacturers as well as the businesses and organizations
that support and serve them.
Flashback: Early
1970’s. Recycling was in its infancy.
The recycling industry was made up of numerous smaller segments (i.e. glass,
steel, plastic, etc.). In 1978, realizing that they shared many of the same
opportunities and threats, leaders of these recycling segments united behind the
National Recycling Coalition (NRC). Nineteen years later, in part because of the
NRC’s efforts, recycling is an integral part of American society; particularly
at the social, political, and consumer levels.
Fast forward to
today: The remanufacturing industry is at a crossroads.
Today, remanufacturing is experiencing a situation much like that faced by
recycling in 1978. Remanufacturing is seeing tremendous growth because
remanufactured products offer economically-friendly solutions that are also
environmentally-friendly. In today’s market place, this is a potent, winning
combination. As remanufacturers or businesses and organizations that support
them, we need to understand and appreciate that we are part of something larger
than our own market niche. Despite the fact our product lines may differ,
remanufacturing involves the same process.
A need to promote
remanufacturing as a concept: A need for a united front
According to Professor Bob Lund of Boston University, who has studied
remanufacturing for years, “Because of its many product sectors, the industry
has not presented a united presence to the public, and it has not been
recognized for its economic importance. Nor has it been appreciated for its
contributions to the environment in terms of energy, materials, labor and
capital equipment conservation, reduction of solid waste, and proper handling of
hazardous materials.”
Leaders from remanufacturing trade associations began meeting as a group called
the Remanufacturing Industries Council International (RICI), and determined that
the most effective way to promote remanufacturing was to form a united front
(much the way the NRC did in 1978). On January 1, 1997, the RICI became a formal
organization; and, in 2000, in cooperation with the Automotive Parts
Remanufacturers
Association, it became The Remanufacturing Institute.
Take
remanufacturing to the next level: Join TRI
The Remanufacturing Institute will unite and promote the remanufacturing
industry by pursuing the following areas:
As remanufacturers, we should look for
every way possible to exploit the strength and benefits of the united
remanufacturing industry. This will benefit all involved.
With your help, TRI can do for remanufacturing what the NRC has done for
recycling over the past two decades. As a means to an end, we ask your support
in taking remanufacturing to the next level by joining TRI as an Associate.
