Urges White House to Embrace Remanufacturing
Fairfax,
Virginia – TRI
Chairman President William C. (Bill) Gager urged the White House to
consider the environmental benefits of remanufacturing in light of its
efforts to develop President Bush’s environmental policies and goals
over the next four years. “President Bush can provide much-needed
leadership in this most important part of our nation’s domestic policy
by spearheading efforts to strengthen the remanufacturing industry,”
wrote Gager in a letter to John Bridgeland of the White House Domestic
Policy Council.
To
strengthen the remanufacturing industry, Gager specifically recommended
the following:
·
Appoint a new
Federal Environmental Executive (FEE) as soon as possible to continue
the policy of encouraging federal departments and agencies to maximize
the procurement of recycled and remanufactured products.
·
Support a 20% tax
credit for the purchase of equipment used in the remanufacturing
process.
·
Urge the Internal
Revenue Service to address remanufacturing industry concerns regarding
inventory valuation issues.
·
Provide more
research and development grants to the National Center for
Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery at the Rochester Institute of
Technology.
·
Help increase
public awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of
remanufacturing and recycling through plant visits, references to the
industries in speeches, and other public relations opportunities.
